Knebels Tavern - Pflugerville, Texas

All you local Austinites are familiar with the GM SteakHouse, you know the place that was in the film “Slacker.” Well I had heard that Gus opened a GM in Pflugerville (the fastest growing city in Texas). My daytime job had sent me north for training so I had decided to check it out and give you guys the lowdown…Much to my disappointment, it had closed just like the original location on Lamar....damn, they made the best hamburgers, loved the fries! Depressed and ready to eat at McDonalds, I noticed out of the corner of my eye a little place called Knebel’s Tavern Grill.

I am not kidding when I say if your neck ain’t red…you may feel a little out of place, but don’t let the surroundings fool you… these folks know how to cook up the burger. Hardwood floors, deer heads on the wall and a tribute sign to Sturgis, South Dakota; I just had the strange feeling that I was on to something wonderful. Now, I am a 190-lb. man with an appetite for big servings and good prices. But I was overwhelmed when I looked at the menu and the Cheeseburge was only $3.50 for about a ½ lb. burger…..you don’t get that at McDonalds, or most other places in the city.

I placed my order, went to the bar and bought a bottle of water, and sat next to one of the many pool tables. Within minutes, this giant ass burger was placed in front of me with a healthy order of fries and a side of jalapeños…oh yeah baby!

Cutting to the chase, I had a hard time finishing the meal…just too damn big. I hadn’t seen a burger like this in a long time. For you locals, Hut’s has nothing on this place. I would compare the cheeseburger in size to Hut’s Dagwood burger…giant, huge, way more than a person needs. My burger was juicy, thick, lots of onions, lechuga and tomatoes…I had died and gone to burger heaven. With the fries and drink I spent just under $6 and I was so full, I felt like I needed a food-coma nap.

I can’t tell you much more about this place other than they offer daily specials which, on the day I was there, included goulash and chicken fried steak. The nice lady working the counter told me that on Fridays and Saturdays they just have BBQ which is cooked by a 60 yr. old man that has been cooking BBQ for most of his life…I’m coming back to try that action soon.

Mr. Food gives Knebel’s Tavern Grill two spoons way up. Again, the giant burgers, quick service and great prices all add up to a winning deal. A little out of the way, but if you are looking for a real burger with an old-time Texas feel, Knebel’s may be one of the few left to enjoy… I think I will be heading north Saturday for the brisket….I will keep you up to date.
